Iraq war

Analysis and critical exposition of the war in IRAQ.
by Kgosi Maepa,University of Pretoria.

History shows that wars are divided into two kinds, just and unjust. All wars that are progressive are just, and all wars that impede progress are unjust. As South Africans we oppose all unjust wars that impede progress, but we do not oppose progressive, just wars. Not only do we South Africans not oppose just wars; we actively participate in them. As for unjust wars, World War I is an instance in which both sides fought for imperialist interests; therefore, the progressive forces of the whole world firmly opposed that war.

Our country and all the other democratic countries want peace; so do the peoples of all the countries of the world. The only ones who crave war and do not want peace are certain monopoly capitalist groups in a handful of imperialist countries that depend on aggression for their profits.

“War is the continuation of politics. In this sense, war is politics and war itself is a political action; since ancient times there has never been a war that did not have a political character…However, war has its own particular characteristics and in this sense, it cannot be equated with politics in general. War is the continuation of politics by other . . . means. When politics develops to a certain stage beyond which it cannot proceed by the usual means, war breaks out to sweep the obstacles from the way.... Nevertheless, if the obstacle is not completely swept away, the war will have to continue until the aim is fully accomplished.... It can therefore be said that politics is war without bloodshed while war is politics with bloodshed” (Mao Tse Tung, 1938).

George Bush ‘s politics have developed in 3 years to a level or stage beyond the point it cannot proceed by the usual means that is why he resorts to war with IRAQ. He claims that the war is because of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) that IRAQ possesses, and his aim is therefore to disarm IRAQ and destroy WMD.

If Bush’s claim is true, then why doesn’t he fight N. Korea were the leadership declared that they possess WMD.

Nevertheless, is being a month and WMD are still not being found in IRAQ. If the WMD are not found or completely swept away, the war will have to continue until Bush’s aim is fully accomplished.... In retrospect George W. Bush is using the tactic of politics with bloodshed.

It is clear that the war in IRAQ is an unjust war. The way to oppose a war of this kind is to do everything possible to prevent it before it breaks out, in that instance we dismally failed and, once it breaks out, another option is to oppose war with war, to oppose unjust war with just war, whenever possible. The major question therefore becomes how do we, the progressive people of the world fight against US continual imperialism? All over the world the people are saying “No blood for Oil” In South Africa what are we saying? It seems that most people advocate the principles of peace, and if that is the case, we should all commit to such principles.

To achieve a lasting world peace, we must further develop our friendship and co-operation with the fraternal countries in the democratic camp and strengthen our solidarity with all peace-loving countries. We must endeavour to establish normal diplomatic relations, based on mutual respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty and of equality and mutual benefit, with all countries willing to live together with us in peace. We must give active support to the national independence and liberation movement in countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America as well as to the peace movement and to just struggles in all the countries of the world.

This means that we should be supportive to the people of IRAQ in their suffering at this point in time, by word of mouth only we wont be active participants, but action will justify our support.
